Recommended dosage of Viagra

Viagra dosing information

For most patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), the recommended dose is 50 mg taken, as needed, one hour before sexual activity. However, Viagra may be taken anywhere from 4 hours up to 30 minutes before sexual activity. Viagra should not be taken more than once in a 24 hour period (1 dose every 48 hours for those taking ritonavir). If you have certain health conditions or are taking certain medications, your doctor may increase or decrease your dose depending on your response to the drug. Viagra comes in three doses: 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg.

Your doctor may start you at the lowest dose of Viagra, 25 mg, if any of these apply to you:

  • 65 years or older
  • Have severe liver or kidney problems
  • You take protease inhibitors, medications used to treat HIV. If you do take them, your doctor may also want to limit your dose of Viagra to no more than 1 pill every 2 days (48 hours).

If you take an alpha blocker drug for blood pressure or prostate problems, you should not take more than 25 mg of Viagra and an alpha blocker within 4 hours of each other. Talk with your doctor to learn more.

How should I take Viagra?

Take your dose of Viagra with a full glass of water. The amount of time Viagra takes to work varies from person to person, but generally takes between 14 to 60 minutes. Taking Viagra after eating a high-fat meal (like a cheeseburger and french fries) may cause the medicine to take a little longer to start working. Some form of sexual stimulation is needed for an erection to occur when taking Viagra, an erection will not occur just by taking a pill.

Do not drink alcohol in excess when taking Viagra (for example, 5 glasses of wine or 5 shots of whiskey). Excessive alcohol may increase the risk of getting a headache, feeling dizzy, increasing your heart rate, or lowering your blood pressure.

Keep Viagra in the container it came in, tightly closed, and away from children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom, your car or near a sink). Dispose of any tablets that have passed their expiration date.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Viagra is taken as needed for male impotence, so it is unlikely that you will miss a dose. However, if you do forget to take Viagra before intimacy, do not take a double dose. Taking a larger dose than recommended will not cause Viagra to work faster and may be dangerous to your health.

What happens if I overdose?

If you take too much Viagra or if you develop dizziness, nausea, or angina (pain, tightness, discomfort, numbness, or tingling in the chest, arms, neck, or jaw) during sexual activity, refrain from further sexual activity and call your doctor or emergency room right away.
